The Boutonne Valley is ideal for boating, canoeing, fishing and all riverside activities. The tourist office in St Jean d’Angely has plenty of ideas of what to do and where to go.
Boating and Canoeing
There is a wonderful lake in St Jean d’Angely, where you can hire canoes, along with all the necessary life jackets, or feed the ducks, hire pedalos, play crazy-golf, there’s a children’s playground, free outdoor swimming pool during the summer months and also an outdoor cafe. On the river at pretty Saint-Savinien, children can also sail quite safely on lovely miniature boats. These are great fun, for both adults and children, and I defy anyone not to enjoy themselves! There is also a play area and café close by.
The area around St Pardoult is fantastic for cycling as there are many quiet roads and picnic opportunities. There are a number of bikes at the cottage which you are welcome to borrow.
The nearest golf course is in Niort and there are also 18-hole courses in Saintes, la Rochelle and Royan.
There is a lovely little playground in the centre of St Pardoult, just a two minute walk from the house, situated on the village green. In Antezant, the next village along from St Pardoult, there is a quiet and tranquil spot on the river with a playground and café.
The nearest swimming pool is in St Jean. There are actually three indoor pools, including one with a water slide, one for babies and also a sauna and café. There is also a pool in nearby Loulay and an outdoor pool in nearby Aulnay. And Chatelaillon-plage has a Centre Aquatique, where rides include a giant water slide, aqua aerobics, sauna, gym room and water babies.
